1. Show or hide the ruler

Feature entry: View → Ruler

  1. Open a WPS Writer document.
  2. Click the View tab on the top menu bar.
  3. Select the Ruler checkbox to show the ruler.
  4. Clear the Ruler checkbox to hide the ruler.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The ruler appears or disappears above and beside the document area.
  • What you can do next: You can continue with indent, tab stop, or margin adjustments.

Tips While Using

  • The ruler is easier to observe in a standard document editing view.
  • If nothing changes, confirm that you are editing a WPS Writer document.

2. Use the ruler to set paragraph indents

Feature entry: Horizontal ruler above the document

  1. Select the paragraph that you want to format.
  2. Locate the indent markers on the left side of the horizontal ruler.
  3. Drag the upper triangle to set the first-line indent.
  4. Drag the lower triangle to set the hanging indent.
  5. Drag the lower rectangle to set the left indent.
  6. Drag the triangle on the right side of the ruler to set the right indent.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The selected paragraph changes its text boundary or first-line position.
  • What you can do next: You can keep editing while preserving the updated paragraph format.

Tips While Using

  • Select the target paragraph before dragging markers so other content is not affected.
  • Each marker controls a different indent behavior, so check the target format before adjusting it.

3. Use the ruler to set tab stops

Feature entry: Left side of the horizontal ruler

  1. Open the document where you want to align text positions.
  2. Click the tab stop type button on the left side of the ruler to switch to the alignment type you need.
  3. Click the target position on the horizontal ruler to add a tab stop.
  4. Enter text and use the Tab key to check the alignment result.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: A new tab stop marker appears on the ruler.
  • What you can do next: Press Tab to move text to the position you set.

Tips While Using

  • Tab stops are useful for catalogs, lists, and item descriptions that need cleaner alignment.
  • If the result is not ideal, choose another position and set the tab stop again.

4. Use the ruler to adjust page margins

Feature entry: The shaded area on the top or left ruler

  1. Move the pointer to the boundary between the shaded and white areas on the ruler.
  2. When the pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, click and drag.
  3. Drag inward or outward to adjust the page margin.
  4. Release the mouse to finish.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The editable page area becomes wider or narrower.
  • What you can do next: You can continue typing, formatting, or checking print preview.

Tips While Using

  • Margin changes affect the overall page layout, so review the page before final output.
  • If the document already uses a fixed layout, check whether the change affects pagination.
