1. Open Layout settings

Entry: Page tab → Page Setup arrow → Layout

  1. Open the WPS Writer document you want to adjust.
  2. Click the Page tab at the top.
  3. Click the arrow in the Page Setup area to open the Page Setup dialog box.
  4. Switch to the Layout tab.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The Page Setup dialog box opens and the Layout tab is visible.
  • You can continue: You can now set section start, header and footer rules, and distance-from-edge values.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Staying on the Page tab without clicking the Page Setup arrow will not open the full dialog box.

2. Set the section start position

Entry: Page → Page Setup arrow → Layout → Section start

  1. Open the Layout tab by following the steps above.
  2. Find the Section start setting.
  3. Select the start type that matches your document structure.
  4. Click OK to apply the setting.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The page setup is saved and the document uses the selected section start behavior.
  • You can continue: You can keep adjusting headers, footers, or other page settings for different sections.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you do not confirm the insertion point or selected content first, the setting may apply to a different range than expected.

3. Set Different first page and Different odd and even pages

Entry: Page → Page Setup arrow → Layout → Headers and footers

  1. Open the Layout tab.
  2. In the Headers and footers area, select Different first page.
  3. If you need double-sided formatting, also select Different odd and even pages.
  4. Click OK to save the settings.
  5. Return to the document and edit the related headers and footers on the corresponding pages.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The first page can use its own header or footer, or odd and even pages can show different content.
  • You can continue: You can keep adding page numbers, titles, or chapter information.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Selecting the options without returning to the header or footer editing area means the visible content will still need to be entered manually.

Entry: Page → Page Setup arrow → Layout → From edge / Apply to

  1. Open the Layout tab.
  2. In From edge, set the distance from the top edge for the header and from the bottom edge for the footer.
  3. In Apply to, choose Whole document, Selected text, or This point forward.
  4. Click OK to finish.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: Header and footer positions follow the distance values you set, and the settings apply to the selected range.
  • You can continue: You can review the page layout result or continue to print preview.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you do not confirm the Apply to range, the result may affect the whole document or only part of it unexpectedly.
