1. Apply preset soft edges

Entry point: Picture Tools → Effects → Soft Edges

  1. Select the picture that you want to edit.
  2. Click the Picture Tools tab.
  3. Click Effects.
  4. Select Soft Edges.
  5. Choose the preset soft edge level you want.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: The picture edge changes from a hard border to a softer transition.
  • Next action available: You can switch to another preset or open more settings for further adjustment.

2. Customize soft edge settings from Picture Tools

Entry point: Picture Tools → Effects → More Settings → Object Properties → Effects → Soft Edges

  1. Select the picture that you want to edit.
  2. Click Effects under the Picture Tools tab.
  3. Click More Settings to open the Object Properties sidebar.
  4. Under Effects, click Soft Edges to expand the settings.
  5. Adjust the Size value to change the soft edge range.

  • Visual result: The right-side pane shows the soft edge settings.
  • Next action available: When you drag or enter a size value, the picture edge updates accordingly.

3. Open soft edge settings from the right-click menu

Entry point: Right-click picture → Set Object Format

  1. Select the picture and right-click it.
  2. Choose Set Object Format.
  3. In the Object Properties pane on the right, click the Effects tab.
  4. Expand Soft Edges to edit the settings.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: The object properties pane opens on the right and shows effect-related options.
  • Next action available: You can adjust the soft edge size and watch the picture edge change.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you right-click a blank area instead of the picture, the picture format menu will not appear.

4. Adjust or remove soft edges from the task pane

Entry point: Task pane → Properties → Effects → Soft Edges

  1. Select the picture.
  2. Click the Properties button in the task pane on the right.
  3. Click the Effects tab.
  4. Expand Soft Edges to adjust the effect.
  5. To remove the effect, choose no soft edge or use reset style to clear the existing effect.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: The task pane shows the current soft edge settings.
  • Next action available: You can continue fine-tuning the size or return the picture to a no-soft-edge state.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Closing the task pane does not remove an effect that has already been applied.
