1. Freeform crop an image

Entry point: Picture Tools tab → Crop

  1. Select the image you want to crop.
  2. Click the Picture Tools tab.
  3. Click Crop.
  4. When crop handles appear around the image, drag the handles to adjust the crop area.
  5. Click outside the image, or press Enter, to confirm the crop.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The image edges change based on your crop adjustment.
  • What you can do next: You can continue moving, resizing, rotating, or cropping the image again.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If the image is not selected first, the crop entry point will not appear.
  • Environment note: Picture-related controls appear only after an image object is selected.

2. Crop an image by aspect ratio or shape

Entry point: Picture Tools tab → CropCropAspect Ratio Crop / Shape Crop

  1. Select the image and click the Picture Tools tab.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow next to Crop.
  3. In the expanded menu, click the arrow next to Crop.
  4. Choose Aspect Ratio Crop and select a preset ratio, or choose Shape Crop and select a target shape.
  5. Adjust the crop area and confirm the result.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The image is displayed in the selected ratio or shape.
  • What you can do next: You can fine-tune the crop area or switch to another crop method.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Opening the menu but not continuing to choose a ratio or shape.

3. Crop an image from the right-click menu

Entry point: Select the image → right-click menu → Crop

  1. Select the image you want to crop.
  2. Right-click the image.
  3. Choose Crop from the menu.
  4. Drag the crop handles to adjust the area.
  5. Click outside the image to confirm.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The image enters crop mode and crop handles appear.

4. Crop an image from the floating toolbar

Entry point: Select the image → floating toolbar → Crop

  1. Select the image you want to crop.
  2. Choose Crop from the floating toolbar.
  3. Drag the crop handles to adjust the area.
  4. If you want to restore the original image shape, click Reset Shape and Size.
  5. Click outside the image to confirm.

5. Switch crop scaling

Entry point: Picture Tools tab → CropFill / Fit

  1. Select the image and click the Picture Tools tab.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow next to Crop.
  3. In the expanded menu, click the arrow next to Crop.
  4. Choose Fill or Fit to change crop scaling automatically.
  5. Fine-tune the result if needed, then confirm it.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The image display changes to either fill the target area or fit within it more completely.
  • What you can do next: You can continue dragging the crop area to refine the visible focus.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Not distinguishing between Fill and Fit, which can either crop too much of the subject or leave too much empty space.

6. Set crop position precisely

Entry point 1: Image right-click menu → Format Object
Entry point 2: Task pane → Properties

  1. Select the image.
  2. Open Format Object from the right-click menu, or click Properties in the right-side task pane.
  3. In the Picture tab, expand Crop.
  4. Set Picture Position values such as width, height, offset X, and offset Y as needed.
  5. Set Crop Position values such as width, height, left, and top as needed.
  6. If you want to restore the original crop state, click Reset.
