How-to Guide
1. Turn On Workbook Protection
Entry: Review → Protect Workbook
- Open the workbook that you want to protect.
- Click Protect Workbook on the Review tab.
- In the dialog box, select Structure to lock sheet insertion, deletion, moving, renaming, hiding, and similar structural actions.
- If needed, select Window to also restrict workbook window size and position.
- Enter a password and confirm it.
- Click OK, then save the file so the protection status is retained.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The workbook is shown as protected.
- What you can do next: You can continue viewing and editing cell content, while structure-related actions are restricted.
- No side effect: Existing worksheet content is not removed when structure protection is enabled.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If you enable protection but do not save the file, the setting may not remain in the workbook.
- Password handling: If a password is set, the same password is required later to remove protection.
- Feature scope: Protect Workbook mainly limits structural actions and does not directly lock cell content editing.
2. Remove Workbook Protection
Entry: Review → Unprotect Workbook
- Open the workbook that already has workbook protection enabled.
- Click Unprotect Workbook on the Review tab.
- Enter the password that was set when protection was enabled.
- Click OK to restore workbook structure editing.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: Workbook protection is removed.
- What you can do next: You can add, delete, move, rename, hide, or unhide worksheets again.
- No side effect: Existing data remains unchanged.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: An incorrect password prevents the workbook from being unprotected.
- File management: If you want to keep later structural changes, save the workbook after removing protection.
