Entry path: Right-click menu → Format Cells → Protection
- Select the cell range that you want to protect.
- Right-click the selected area and choose Format Cells.
- Open the Protection tab.
- Select Locked, then click OK.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The cell format setting is saved and the lock property has been applied.
- What you can do next: You can continue to the Review tab and enable sheet protection.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If you only set the Locked property without protecting the sheet, the cells can still be edited.
- Environment note: This setting must be applied in an editable worksheet.
2. Enable Protection to Make Locking Effective
Entry path: Review → Protect Sheet
- After setting cell locking, click Protect Sheet on the Review tab.
- Set a protection password in the dialog box.
- In the Allow all users of this worksheet to list, select the permissions you want to allow.
- Confirm the password and click OK to make the locking take effect immediately.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The worksheet enters a protected state.
- What you can do next: Unlocked areas remain editable based on permissions, while locked areas cannot be changed directly.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If editable areas are not planned in advance, protecting the sheet may make the whole worksheet hard to update.
- Environment note: To remove protection or adjust the locked range later, you usually need to unprotect the sheet first and enter the password.
