1. Enter DATEDIF from the Insert Function dialog

Entry point: Formulas tab → Insert Function

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Click the fx button in the formula bar, or click Insert Function on the Formulas tab.
  3. Search for DATEDIF in the Insert Function dialog.
  4. Select the function and click OK.
  5. Enter each parameter in the Function Arguments dialog.
  6. Click OK to insert the function.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The target cell contains a DATEDIF formula.
  • Next action available: You can continue editing parameters, press Enter to confirm, or copy the formula to other cells.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: A misspelled function name can make the function harder to find in search.
  • Environment note: The referenced start date and end date should be valid date values.

2. Type the formula directly in a cell

Entry point: Worksheet cell or formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Type =DATEDIF(...) directly in the cell or formula bar.
  3. Press Enter to confirm.
  4. If you want to check the parameter prompt, type =DATEDIF( and press F1.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The cell shows the calculation result or keeps the entered formula.
  • Next action available: You can fill down, copy and paste, or continue editing the formula.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Using nonstandard separators can cause a formula error.

3. Check syntax and parameter details

Entry point: Formulas tab → Insert Function

  1. Click Insert Function on the Formulas tab.
  2. Type DATEDIF in the search box.
  3. Select the function and review the syntax: DATEDIF(start_date, end_date, unit).
  4. Click the help link for the function to view more details.
