2. Type the formula directly in a cell

Entry point: Target cell or formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Type =COUNTA(...) directly in the cell or in the formula bar.

  4. If you want to review parameter guidance, type =COUNTA( and press F1 to open syntax help.

Success Criteria

  • The cell shows a calculated result instead of unfinished text.
  • When you select the cell, the full formula is visible in the formula bar.

Tips While Using

  • Start the formula with an equals sign.
  • If you use non-English punctuation for separators, the formula may not calculate correctly.

Entry point: Formula tab → Insert Function

  1. Click Insert Function on the Formula tab.
  2. Enter COUNTA in the search box.
  3. Select the function to review the syntax COUNTA(...).

  • You can continue entering parameters and return to the worksheet to use the formula.

Tips While Using

  • Opening detailed help may require an internet connection.
  • Confirm the reference range before final entry to reduce result mismatches.
