How-to Guide

1. Insert COUNT from the function dialog box

Entry: Formula tab → Insert Function, or the fx button in the formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Click the fx button in the formula bar, or click Insert Function on the Formula tab.
  3. Search for COUNT in the Insert Function dialog box.
  4. Select the function and click OK.
  5. Enter each argument in the Function Arguments dialog box.
  6. Click OK to finish inserting the function.

Success Criteria

  • The current cell contains a COUNT formula.
  • The worksheet shows the corresponding result.
  • You can continue editing the arguments or copy the formula to other cells.

Tips While Using

  • You can search the function name in uppercase or lowercase, but the function name should remain COUNT.
  • COUNT only counts numeric values in its arguments; text is not included in the result.

2. Type the formula directly in a cell

Entry: Cell area → formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Type =COUNT(...) directly in the cell or in the formula bar.
  3. Press Enter to confirm.
  4. If you want to review parameter guidance, type =COUNT( and press F1 to view syntax help.

Success Criteria

  • The cell returns a counting result after entry.
  • The formula bar shows the full COUNT formula.
  • You can fill down or copy the formula to other cells.

Tips While Using

  • Use English commas to separate arguments. Full-width commas can cause a formula error.
  • If numbers in the referenced range are stored as text, the COUNT result may be lower than expected.

3. Review syntax and parameter details

Entry: Formula tab → Insert Function

  1. Click Insert Function on the Formula tab.
  2. Enter COUNT in the search box.
  3. Select the function to review the syntax COUNT(...).
  4. Click the help link for the function to open more detailed guidance.

Success Criteria

  • You can see the COUNT function name, syntax, and argument area.
  • You can confirm how the arguments should be entered.
  • You can return to the worksheet and continue entering the formula.

Tips While Using

  • Check the number of arguments and the referenced range before entry to reduce errors.
  • Syntax review is useful before copying the formula across a larger range.
