How-to Guide

1. Set Automatic Calculation

Entry path: Formulas tab → Calculation Options → Automatic

  1. Open the WPS spreadsheet file that you want to edit.
  2. Click the Formulas tab.
  3. Click the Calculation Options drop-down menu.
  4. Select Automatic.
  5. Change any value used by a formula and check whether the result updates automatically.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: Calculation Options shows Automatic.
  • What you can do next: When you change a cell value, related formula results update automatically.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If the result does not change, first check whether the formula references the correct cells.
  • Environment note: You need a worksheet with formulas to see the effect clearly.

2. Set Manual Calculation

Entry path: Formulas tab → Calculation Options → Manual

  1. Open WPS Spreadsheet and go to the workbook where you want to control recalculation.
  2. Click Calculation Options on the Formulas tab.
  3. Select Manual.
  4. Change data and confirm that formula results do not update immediately.
  5. Press F9 to recalculate the full workbook.
  6. If you only want to recalculate the current worksheet, press Shift+F9.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: Calculation Options shows Manual.
  • What you can do next: Formula results update only after you trigger recalculation manually.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: After switching to manual mode, it is easy to think a formula stopped working when it only needs manual recalculation.
  • Environment note: Keyboard shortcuts work when the spreadsheet editing window is active.

3. Set Automatic Except for Data Tables

Entry path: Formulas tab → Calculation Options → Automatic Except for Data Tables

  1. Open a workbook that contains regular formulas and data tables.
  2. Click the Formulas tab.
  3. Open the Calculation Options drop-down menu.
  4. Select Automatic Except for Data Tables.
  5. Change data used by regular formulas and confirm that the results update automatically.
  6. Check that formulas in data tables do not recalculate automatically.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: Automatic Except for Data Tables is selected.
  • What you can do next: Regular formulas update automatically, while formulas in data tables do not recalculate automatically.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If the workbook does not contain data tables, the behavior may feel similar to standard automatic calculation.
  • Environment note: This mode is mainly useful in complex workbooks that include data tables.
