1. Enter AVERAGEIFS from the Insert Function dialog

Entry: Formulas tab → Insert Function

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Click the fx button in the formula bar, or click Insert Function on the Formulas tab.
  3. Search for AVERAGEIFS in the Insert Function dialog.
  4. Select the function and click OK.
  5. Enter each argument in the Function Arguments dialog.
  6. Click OK to finish inserting the formula.

Success Criteria

  • On-screen result: The target cell shows the AVERAGEIFS formula or its calculated result.
  • Next action available: You can continue editing arguments, copying the formula, or filling it down.

Tips While Using

  • Search with the full function name to find the function more quickly.
  • Make sure the average range and each criteria range correspond correctly.

2. Type the formula directly in a cell

Entry: Cell → Formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Type =AVERAGEIFS(...) directly in the cell or in the formula bar.
  3. Press Enter to confirm.
  4. If you want to review the syntax, type =AVERAGEIFS( and then press F1 to open the syntax prompt.

Success Criteria

  • On-screen result: The cell returns a calculated result, and the formula bar keeps the full formula.
  • Next action available: You can adjust criteria, change references, or copy the formula to other cells.

Tips While Using

  • Use standard comma separators in the formula to avoid syntax errors.
  • When copying the formula, check whether relative and absolute references behave as expected.

3. Review syntax and parameter details

Entry: Formulas tab → Insert Function

  1. Click Insert Function on the Formulas tab.
  2. Enter AVERAGEIFS in the search box.
  3. Select the function to review the syntax AVERAGEIFS(...).
  4. Click the help link for the function to open more details.

Success Criteria

  • On-screen result: You can see the function name, argument order, and the help entry.
  • Next action available: You can return to the worksheet and continue entering or editing the formula.

Tips While Using

  • Pay close attention to the order of the average range, criteria ranges, and criteria values.
  • If the result looks wrong, return to the parameter view and check each entry one by one.
