1. Insert AGGREGATE from the Insert Function dialog

Entry point: Formula tab → Insert Function, or the fx button in the formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Click the fx button in the formula bar, or click Insert Function on the Formula tab.
  3. Search for AGGREGATE in the Insert Function dialog.
  4. Select the function and click OK.
  5. Enter each argument in the Function Arguments dialog.
  6. Click OK to finish inserting the function.

Success Criteria

  • The current cell contains an AGGREGATE formula.
  • A calculation result is returned after the arguments are entered.
  • The formula can be edited further or copied to other cells.

Tips While Using

  • Search with the function name AGGREGATE.
  • Separate arguments with English commas.

2. Type the formula directly in a cell

Entry point: A worksheet cell or the formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Type =AGGREGATE(...) directly in the cell or in the formula bar.
  3. Press Enter to confirm.
  4. If you want to review the argument prompt, type =AGGREGATE( and then press F1.

Success Criteria

  • The cell shows a calculated result instead of plain text.
  • The full formula is visible in the formula bar when the cell is selected.
  • The formula can be filled into adjacent cells when needed.

Tips While Using

  • If the result does not calculate, check whether the equal sign or parentheses are missing.
  • When copying the formula, review relative and absolute references.

3. Review the syntax and argument details

Entry point: Formula tab → Insert Function

  1. Click Insert Function on the Formula tab.
  2. Enter AGGREGATE in the search box.
  3. Select the function and review the syntax: AGGREGATE(function_num, options, ref1, [ref2], ...).
  4. Click the help link for more details.

Success Criteria

  • The full syntax structure is visible.
  • You can distinguish the roles of function_num, options, and the reference arguments.
  • You can continue entering the formula based on the displayed guidance.

Tips While Using

  • Some aggregation types require an additional argument such as ref2.
  • If an argument is missing, the function may return an error value.
