What should I do if I forget the Restrict Editing password?

  1. Check whether you still have the original unprotected file or an earlier version.
  2. If a backup copy is available, continue editing from that version.
  3. If no backup is available and the correct password cannot be provided, the current protection cannot be stopped directly.

How can I let specific people keep editing after Restrict Editing is enabled?

  1. Open the Restrict Editing pane.
  2. Click More Users.
  3. Add the users who should be allowed to edit.
  4. Save the settings so those users can edit within the authorized scope.

Which restriction should I choose if I only want feedback and do not want direct text changes?

  1. Open the Restrict Editing pane.
  2. Select Allow only this type of editing in the document.
  3. Choose Comments or Tracked changes from the drop-down list.
  4. Choose Comments if you only want feedback, or choose Tracked changes if you want visible revision records.
  1. After protection starts, changing the restriction settings usually requires the password.
  2. If the password is forgotten, the protected file becomes difficult to adjust.
  3. Saving an unrestricted backup first gives you a clean version for future changes.
