How-to Guide

1. Open Wrap and Page Break settings

Feature entry: Home tab → Paragraph group dialog launcher, or right-click a paragraph and select Paragraph.

  1. Open the document you want to edit.
  2. Select the target paragraph, or press Ctrl+A to select the whole document first.
  3. Click the dialog launcher in the lower-right corner of the Paragraph group on the Home tab.
  4. In the Paragraph dialog box, open the Wrap and Page Break tab.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the Paragraph dialog box opens and shows the Wrap and Page Break tab.
  • Next action available: you can select pagination and wrapping options.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: if you do not select the intended paragraph first, the setting may apply only to the paragraph at the cursor position.

2. Set pagination controls

Feature entry: Home → Paragraph → Wrap and Page Break tab.

  1. Open the Wrap and Page Break tab.
  2. In the pagination area, select Widow/Orphan Control, Keep with Next, Keep Lines Together, or Page Break Before as needed.
  3. Click OK to save the setting.
  4. Return to the document and review the page layout result.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the selected paragraph follows the pagination behavior you set.
  • Next action available: you can turn pages and confirm whether the paragraph stays together or starts on a new page.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: using Page Break Before together with Keep with Next can affect the final layout in ways you may not expect.

3. Adjust wrapping rules

Feature entry: Home → Paragraph → Wrap and Page Break tab.

  1. Open the Wrap and Page Break tab.
  2. In the wrapping area, select the option for Chinese line-start and line-end control if needed.
  3. Depending on the document, decide whether to allow Western words to break in the middle, allow punctuation overflow, or allow punctuation compression at the start of a line.
  4. Click OK and review the wrapping result in the paragraph.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: line wrapping changes in mixed Chinese and Western text.
  • Next action available: the updated wrapping rules remain in effect as you continue editing.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: if the target paragraph is not selected, the scope of the setting may not match your expectation.

4. Insert a line break

Feature entry: Insert tab → Breaks → Line Break.

  1. Place the cursor where you want the line break.
  2. Click the Insert tab.
  3. Click Breaks and choose Line Break, or press Shift+Enter.
  4. Continue typing the rest of the content in the same paragraph.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the text moves to the next line without creating a new paragraph.
  • Next action available: the following content remains part of the same paragraph.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: pressing Enter creates a new paragraph, which is different from inserting a line break.

5. Insert a page break

Feature entry: Insert tab → Breaks → Page Break.

  1. Place the cursor where the new page should begin.
  2. Click the Insert tab.
  3. Click Breaks and choose Page Break, or press Ctrl+Enter.
  4. Check whether the following content starts on a new page.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: content after the cursor starts on the next page.
  • Next action available: you can continue editing on the new page.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: a page break only forces a new page and does not create a new section.

6. Insert a section break

Feature entry: Insert tab → Breaks drop-down menu.

  1. Place the cursor where the new section should begin.
  2. Click the Breaks drop-down button on the Insert tab.
  3. Choose Next Page Section Break, Continuous Section Break, Even Page Section Break, or Odd Page Section Break.
  4. Continue with page-format settings for the new section as needed.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: a new section is inserted with the selected break type.
  • Next action available: you can set page orientation, headers and footers, or paper size separately for different sections.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: mixing page breaks and section breaks can make it harder to tell where page-format changes begin.

7. Change page orientation with a section break

Feature entry: Insert → Breaks → Next Page Section Break, then open page orientation settings.

  1. Set the whole document to the current orientation you need first, such as landscape.
  2. Place the cursor at the beginning of the page where the orientation should change.
  3. Click Insert → Breaks → Next Page Section Break.
  4. Open page orientation settings again and change the current section to the other orientation, such as portrait.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: pages before and after the break can display different orientations.
  • Next action available: later sections can also be adjusted independently.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: if you change page orientation before inserting a section break, the change affects the whole document.

8. Insert a column break

Feature entry: the relevant layout command in a multi-column document.

  1. Make sure the current document already uses a multi-column layout.
  2. Place the cursor where content should move to the next column.
  3. Insert a column break so the following content starts in the next column.
  4. Check whether the content flow between columns matches your layout goal.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the following content starts in the next column.
  • Next action available: you can continue adjusting the order and position of content in columns.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: if the page is not already set to columns, the result of a column break may not be obvious.
