  1. Open the WPS Writer document where you want to add page numbers.
  2. Click Insert on the top menu bar.
  3. Open the Page Number drop-down menu.
  4. Click Page Number.
  5. Set the page number style, starting number, and apply range in the dialog box.
  6. Confirm the settings to finish insertion.

Success Criteria

  • Page numbers are visible in the document.
  • The numbering style and starting number match your settings.
  • Following pages continue numbering under the current rule.

Tips While Using

  • If different parts of the document need different numbering rules, insert a section break before setting page numbers.
  • When choosing the apply range, confirm whether the setting applies to the whole document, the current section, or the current page and after.

2. Start page numbers from a specific page

Feature path: Page → Breaks → Next Page Section Break

  1. Place the cursor at the end of the page before the page where numbering should begin.
  2. Click Page on the top menu bar.
  3. Click Breaks and select Next Page Section Break.
  4. Go to the page where page numbering should start.
  5. Double-click the page number area to enter editing mode.
  6. Turn off Link to Previous in the header and footer options.
  7. Delete the page numbers that should not appear in the earlier section.
  8. Set the page number for the current section again and change the starting number to the value you need, such as 1.

Success Criteria

  • A new page number sequence starts from the specified page.
  • The previous section and current section no longer affect each other's page number settings.
  • The cover page, table of contents, or front matter can stay separate from the main body numbering.

Tips While Using

  • If Link to Previous stays on, the current section may still follow the previous section's numbering.
  • If numbering does not restart as expected, check whether the section break was inserted in the correct place.

Feature path: Insert → Page Number drop-down menu → Delete Page Number

  1. Click Insert on the top menu bar.
  2. Open the Page Number drop-down menu.

  • Page numbers are removed from the current document.
  • The main document content remains unchanged.
  • You can insert a new page number setup again if needed.

  • If the document contains multiple sections, check whether the removal affects the current section or the whole document.
  • After removal, you can return to the page number menu to set numbering again.
