1. Insert page numbers
Feature path: Insert → Page Number drop-down menu → Page Number
- Open the WPS Writer document where you want to add page numbers.
- Click Insert on the top menu bar.
- Open the Page Number drop-down menu.
- Click Page Number.
- Set the page number style, starting number, and apply range in the dialog box.
- Confirm the settings to finish insertion.
Success Criteria
- Page numbers are visible in the document.
- The numbering style and starting number match your settings.
- Following pages continue numbering under the current rule.
Tips While Using
- If different parts of the document need different numbering rules, insert a section break before setting page numbers.
- When choosing the apply range, confirm whether the setting applies to the whole document, the current section, or the current page and after.
2. Start page numbers from a specific page
Feature path: Page → Breaks → Next Page Section Break
- Place the cursor at the end of the page before the page where numbering should begin.
- Click Page on the top menu bar.
- Click Breaks and select Next Page Section Break.
- Go to the page where page numbering should start.
- Double-click the page number area to enter editing mode.
- Turn off Link to Previous in the header and footer options.
- Delete the page numbers that should not appear in the earlier section.
- Set the page number for the current section again and change the starting number to the value you need, such as 1.
Success Criteria
- A new page number sequence starts from the specified page.
- The previous section and current section no longer affect each other's page number settings.
- The cover page, table of contents, or front matter can stay separate from the main body numbering.
Tips While Using
- If Link to Previous stays on, the current section may still follow the previous section's numbering.
- If numbering does not restart as expected, check whether the section break was inserted in the correct place.
3. Remove page numbers quickly
Feature path: Insert → Page Number drop-down menu → Delete Page Number
- Click Insert on the top menu bar.
- Open the Page Number drop-down menu.
- Click Delete Page Number.
Success Criteria
- Page numbers are removed from the current document.
- The main document content remains unchanged.
- You can insert a new page number setup again if needed.
Tips While Using
- If the document contains multiple sections, check whether the removal affects the current section or the whole document.
- After removal, you can return to the page number menu to set numbering again.
