1. Add borders to text or paragraphs

Feature entry: Select text or a paragraph → Home → Borders → Borders and Shading

  1. Select the text or paragraph that you want to format.
  2. Click the Home tab on the top menu bar.
  3. Find Borders and click the drop-down arrow.
  4. Select Borders and Shading to open the settings dialog.
  5. In the Borders tab, choose a preset and set the line style, color, and width.
  6. In Apply to, choose Text or Paragraph.
  7. Click OK to apply the setting.

Success Criteria

  • The selected content shows the border style you set.
  • The visible border range matches the selected Apply to scope.

Tips While Using

  • When you apply the setting to Paragraph, you can use Options to adjust spacing between the border and body text.
  • If no text is selected first, some settings may apply to the paragraph by default.

2. Apply a shading color

Feature entry: Select text or a paragraph → Page → Page Borders → Shading

  1. Select the text or paragraph that you want to shade.
  2. Click the Page tab.
  3. Click Page Borders.
  4. In the dialog box, switch to the Shading tab.
  5. Choose the color you want under Fill.
  6. If needed, choose a pattern style.
  7. In Apply to, choose Text or Paragraph.
  8. Click OK to finish.

  • The selected content displays the shading color you chose.

  • Shading is different from text highlighting, so the visible area may differ.

3. Remove character shading or fill color

Feature entry: Select shaded text → Page → Page Borders → Shading

  1. Select the text that already has shading.
  2. Click the Page tab and choose Page Borders.
  3. In the Borders and Shading dialog, switch to the Shading tab.
  4. Under Fill, choose No Color.
  5. Click OK.

Success Criteria

  • The previous shading color is removed.
  • The text returns to a plain background state.

Tips While Using

  • If the paragraph still shows a background effect, check whether paragraph-level shading is still applied.

4. Set a page border

Feature entry: Page → Page Borders

  1. Click the Page tab on the top menu bar.
  2. Select Page Borders to open the Borders and Shading dialog.
  3. Switch to the Page Border tab.
  4. Choose a preset and set the line style, color, and width.
  5. If you want a decorative border, choose a style from the Art drop-down list.
  6. In Apply to, choose the scope you want.
  7. If needed, click Options to adjust the distance between the border and the page or text.
  8. Click OK to finish.

5. Set borders and shading for a table or cell

  2. Right-click the selected area and choose Table Properties.
  3. Switch to the Table tab and click Borders and Shading.
  4. Choose a preset and set the line style, color, and width.
