1. Use the ribbon Clear Formatting option

Feature entry: Home tab → Clear Formatting

  1. Select the text whose formatting you want to remove. To process the full document, press Ctrl+A first.
  2. Click the Home tab at the top of the window.
  3. Find the Clear Formatting button with the eraser icon.
  4. Click the button to remove font, color, paragraph, and related formatting from the selected text.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The selected text returns to the current document default style.
  • What you can do next: You can apply new font settings, paragraph settings, or styles.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If no text is selected first, the result may not affect the intended content.
  • Tip: To standardize the whole document, select all content before using the command.

2. Clear formatting from Styles

Feature entry: Home tab → Styles area → lower-right arrow → Clear Formatting

  1. Select the text whose formatting you want to remove.
  2. Click the Home tab.
  3. Click the arrow in the lower-right corner of the Styles area.
  4. In the expanded styles panel, select Clear Formatting.
  5. Finish clearing the text formatting.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The text no longer keeps the manually applied font and paragraph styling.
  • What you can do next: You can continue applying a body style or heading style from the styles panel.

  • Common mistake: If the text is not selected first, the cleared range may not match what you expect.

3. Clear formatting from the task pane

Feature entry: Right task pane → Styles and Formatting → Clear Formatting

  1. Select the text whose formatting you want to remove.
  2. Open Styles and Formatting in the right-side task pane.
  3. Select Clear Formatting.
  4. Finish clearing the formatting for the selected text.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The text returns to the default style, and the task pane remains available for further style review.
  • What you can do next: You can continue checking and applying other styles in the task pane.
