How-to Guide
1. Open Character Spacing settings
Feature entry: Select text → right-click → Font → Character Spacing; or select text → Home → small button in the Font area → Character Spacing
- Select the text you want to adjust in the document.
- Open the Font settings from the right-click menu or from the Home tab.
- In the Font dialog box, switch to the Character Spacing tab.
Success Criteria
- The Font dialog box is open.
- You can see options for scale, spacing, position, and kerning.
Tips While Using
- If no text is selected, the setting may apply to text you type afterward.
- If the document is read-only, you may not be able to save the result.
2. Adjust character scale
Feature entry: Character Spacing tab → Scale
- Open the Character Spacing tab first.
- Find the Scale drop-down list or input box.
- Enter or choose the percentage you need.
- Check the preview and click OK.
Success Criteria
- The selected text becomes visually narrower or wider.
- The text looks more compact or more open, depending on the value you set.
Tips While Using
- Scale changes the width of the characters themselves, not the gap between characters.
- Small adjustments are usually easier to control in headings and body text.
3. Set expanded or condensed spacing and character position
Feature entry: Character Spacing tab → Spacing / Position
- Open the Character Spacing tab.
- In Spacing, choose Normal, Expanded, or Condensed.
- Enter the value you want to control the distance between characters.
- If needed, choose Raised or Lowered in Position.
- Confirm the preview and click OK.
Success Criteria
- The distance between characters changes, or the characters move up or down.
- The text alignment and visual layout better match your intended result.
Tips While Using
- Spacing changes the gap between characters, while Position changes vertical offset.
- Large values can reduce readability, so it is helpful to adjust gradually.
4. Turn on kerning for fonts
Feature entry: Character Spacing tab → Kerning for fonts
- Select the text you want to refine, especially text with letters or numbers.
- Open the Character Spacing tab.
- Turn on the Kerning for fonts option.
- Click OK to apply the setting.
Success Criteria
- Letters, numbers, or mixed-language text look more visually even.
- Uneven spacing in part of the text is reduced.
Tips While Using
- This option is especially useful for mixed-language content or text with varied character widths.
- If the result is still not ideal, combine it with spacing or position adjustments.
