How-to Guide
1. Add Character Shading
Feature path: Select text → Home → Character Shading
- Select the text that you want to shade.
- Open the Home tab.
- Click Character Shading.
- Check whether the selected text now shows a gray background.
Success Criteria
- The selected text shows the default gray shading effect.
- The text content remains editable.
Tips While Using
- Character Shading uses a gray effect by default. If you need another color, use Shading Color instead.
- Select the text first before clicking the command.
2. Apply a Shading Color
Feature path: Select text → Home → Shading Color
- Select the text that you want to color.
- Open the shading color command on the Home tab.
- Choose the color that you want.
- Confirm that the text background changes to the selected color.
Success Criteria
- The selected text shows the chosen shading color.
- You can continue editing the same text or change the color again.
Tips While Using
- Different colors work well for different categories, so it helps to keep a consistent color rule in one document.
- If you only need quick emphasis, Highlight may be enough.
3. Use Highlight
Feature path: Select text → Home → Highlight
- Select the text that you want to mark.
- Click the Highlight command on the Home tab.
- Choose a highlight color.
- Check whether the text now shows a highlighter-style effect.
Success Criteria
- The text shows a visible highlight effect.
- Important content becomes easier to locate on the page.
Tips While Using
- Highlight is especially useful for review, study, and temporary marking.
- After marking multiple items, check whether the colors are consistent.
4. Clear Shading or Highlight
Feature path: Select text → Clear related formatting or remove the current effect
- Select the text that already has shading or highlighting.
- Remove the shading, remove the highlight, or use a clear formatting command based on the available command in the current interface.
- Check whether the text returns to a normal display state.
- If any effect remains, select the text again and repeat the clearing action.
Success Criteria
- The shading or highlight effect is removed.
- The document returns to a cleaner reading state.
Tips While Using
- Clear formatting may also remove other text styles, so confirm the selection range before using it.
- If you only want to remove one effect, use the matching remove command first.
